Setting Up Microsoft 365 SMTP for Sending Emails from the Application

How to set up a Microsoft 365 email mailbox to send emails from your Microsoft 365 email address?

Written by Petr Pech

ABRA Flexi allows you to configure a custom SMTP server, so email messages can be sent from your company domain.

Among other options, you can also use the SMTP settings from Microsoft 365. The default configuration can be found on the official Microsoft 365 website.

However, if your organization uses two-step verification for sign-in, MS 365 may require app-specific passwords to be assigned to individual applications.

Note:

If your organization does not use two-step sign-in, it should be possible to use your standard MS 365 mailbox password and skip the procedure described below.

These passwords can be easily set up in your MS 365 account settings. The full procedure is described in the official Microsoft guide.

In short, the process involves opening the "Additional security verification" section in your account settings, creating a new sign-in method ("App password"), and setting up a password specifically for the ABRA Flexi application.

A detailed guide is available on the official Microsoft website, under the section "Creating and deleting app passwords." A video tutorial in English is also freely available on YouTube: video tutorial.

Once you have created the app password, use it in the SMTP server settings in ABRA Flexi.

ABRA Flexi Settings

In the desktop application, the SMTP server can be configured under the module "Tools -> SMTP Server Settings". To access this feature, the user must have the ADMIN role with server permissions — Access to all companies.

  1. In the SMTP settings, enter your email address, port 587, and security STARTSSL.

  2. Default sender is the full email address of your choice, associated with your Microsoft 365 account.

  3. Username is the email address used to sign in to MS 365.

  4. The password corresponds to the app password set for ABRA Flexi (generated according to the guide).

FAQ

In rare cases, an error may occur (see screenshot below).

In that case, simply change the "Connection security" field to "TLS".
