An application error appears when importing from Excel if the file is not an actual Excel spreadsheet file type.
Files may have the XLS extension but are not saved as Excel spreadsheets.
Excel itself will report this when opening such a file.
The files may be text-based; the solution is to re-save them in Excel file format.
